Beverly, West Virginia

How many of you have ever heard of the small town of Beverly located in the U.S. state of West Virginia?  So you have never heard of this town.  The truth is that very few people have ever heard of the small town of Beverly, West Virginia.  Established in 1787, it was a predominant town in the valley.  It was the county seat of Randolph County until 1899.  Why?  Another city that is in the county was more predominant and was named the county seat.  What city was this?

In 1899, the city of Elkins was named the county seat of Randolph County.  Why?  The city of Elkins was the economic center of the county, but another thing played a role into making Elkins the county seat.  With Elkins being an economic center, the railroad came to the city.  With the railroad in town, more people and goods were able to go from Elkins to other cities, states, and to coastal ports to other parts of the world.  Today, Much of the railroads that built Elkins are gone with only excursion trains by Mountain Rail departing from the old train station.  Many of the old railroad lines are now rail trails.

Some of you are saying, “Well then, I have no reason to visit the town of Beverly.”

Not so fast.

The Beverly Heritage Center tells the history of the town and how the railroad played a big role in the town no longer being the county seat.  Many of the old structures in the town still stand with many of them restored.  As for Elkins, you can learn about the railroad of the region at the West Virginia Railroad Museum located a short walk from the old train station.

When in Elkins, West Virginia, make a short trip to visit the town of Beverly.  Visit the small town that has a lot of history.  Visit the Beverly Heritage Center.  You will see that this small town has much to see.
